Fellowship
Somerville is a transient community. Many folks come to First Church having freshly moved from somewhere else, feeling isolated and far from family and friends. We love to have fun together, and provide newcomers with opportunities to meet neighbors, make friends and find their place in their new hometown.
- Movie Night provides different opportunities for community here at First Church Somerville and the wider Davis Square community. On the third Friday of the month (or so) we gather to watch a film that more often than not gives way to great discussion. In true UCC democratic fashion, movie titles are decided by the people; voting happens on the blog. Real popcorn is always provided during the movie, made with oil, not the microwave; after the film there is a chance for discussion over some fine sweets. For more information contact Tom Scholfield at TomScholfield@gmail.com.
- Game Nightis a social event scheduled on an irregular basis, averaging every six weeks or so. Everyone from the congregation (and the greater Boston area) is welcomed to engage in a little friendly board gaming. Childhood favorites like Scrabble are played right next to more obscure strategy and cooperative games, with lighthearted creativity games offered to change the pace. Bring your personal favorite, or enjoy a game from the sponsors’ extensive game library. The event is usually held on a weekend evening for a few hours.
- Book Club is a space to talk about books that you are passionate about loving (or not loving). We gather with a few people at someone’s house and enjoy delicious munchies. It gives us an opportunity for the type of analytical or philosophical discussion we may be missing in the hum of our everyday responsibilities. Each book club is run by a different member of the congregation. That member chooses a book, organizes a day to read it by and then sends out an email to the church list. On meeting day, s/he provides some goodies and then facilitates discussion of the book. Jeff (jeffreybanks71@gmail.com) and Michelle (michellecolleen@gmail.com)are willing to help guide any new book clubbers who think they may want to host a book club!
- Seasonal Fun We respond to the rhythms and cycles of the season. In summer, urban campfire singalongs give way to fall “Keeping the Faith” outdoor Red Sox parties, apple picking, or winter karaoke field trips.
