Sacred Conversations on Race Study Circle Begins 3/3/09
STUDY CIRCLE
Tuesdays, March 3 to April 28 (biweekly from 7 to 9 PM with online sessions on alternate weeks)
This is an opportunity for FCS members to go more deeply and intentionally into Sacred Conversation on Race in a loving and supportive environment with a small group.
Through conversation, readings, journaling, story-telling and research, participants in this group will explore answers to questions such as:
- What do we mean by terms like race, racism, whiteness, and multi-cultural?
- When does racial or cultural difference matter and when doesn’t it?
- How does systemic racism operate within organizations?
- What can we do as individuals and as a congregation to address racism as a barrier to Beloved Community?
- What does it take to create environments in which people of different racial ethnic groups feel a true sense of belonging and connection?
Additional questions and related topics for exploration may be generated by the group. If you would like to participate in this study group, please contact Tim Duhamel at 617-666-5924 or timduhamel@hotmail.com. Participation is limited to 12 to be sure everyone has ample opportunity to share their questions, insights and reflections with the group. Meets at First Church Somerville. Facilitator and Guide: Meck Groot with assistance from Joan Dolamore.

Hello, I am not a member of your congregation yet but have plans to join. At present, I am a recovering Catholic and have heard phenomenal things about First Church!
The program on discussing race struck me. I am afraid the program ended in April but if it is repeated I would love to participate.
I intended to come to services this morning but (being disabled) my best intentions at times go awry!
Is there an organized way to come and meet you all and learn about the church? Or do I just show up?

Patti: I just saw this comment. You can see that at First Church we pretend to be tech-savvy but aren’t always.
I know you have been coming to church and maybe finding out what you need to know? If there’s anything else you need, let me know. We periodically run newcomers/new members’ orientation/tours/get to know you, about twice a year. We just did it in May, so if you weren’t around yet, just hold on, and if you’d like an easier way to make friends than coffee hour (which can be overwhelming!) know that in July “Summer Small Groups” are coming–a great opportunity for newer folks to get involved.
bless you! Look forward to getting to know you as I get back in the saddle!
